Published: 25th November 2020

Council is now calling for locals to submit their nominations for the 2021 Australia Day Awards and recognise and thank those who make significant contributions to the community or who have accomplished exceptional achievements.

There are eight categories for the 2021 awards:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Senior Citizen of the Year
  • Senior Sports Award
  • Junior Sports Award
  • Community Event of the Year
  • Arts and Culture Award
  • Southern Gulf NRM Sarus Crane Award.

The winners of these, as well as the Council-Nominated Spirit of Mount Isa Award, will be announced and presented with their medals and certificates on Australia Day – January 26, 2021 – at the Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre.

Mayor Danielle Slade said the awards recognise and honour local residents for their outstanding contribution to our community and she encourages people to submit their nominations as soon as possible.

“These prestigious awards are for people who have a strong association with the Mount Isa region and are role models that people can look up to,” Cr Slade said.

“They have made significant contributions to the wellbeing of the community through personal service, or their efforts have made a lasting and significant difference to the quality of life in Mount Isa.

“The sports awards honour those who have accomplished a noteworthy record of achievement in sport or are a ‘behind-the-scenes’ organiser or promoter who has put in a lot of time and effort into local sports.

“The Australia Day Awards carry a lot of personal significance for locals – even just being nominated is public recognition for those people who are making a substantial contribution to our community.

“It would be great if people could get their nominations in before the Christmas break.

“So if you have someone or a community group or event in mind, by all means, please submit your nomination via the link on our website at www.mountisa.qld.gov.au/event-information-and-forms

“If completing the online form is difficult for anyone, they are encouraged to call us on 4747 3200 and someone will be available to fill out the form for them over the phone or in person.”

Nominations close at close of business on Monday, December 21, 2020.
