Six Mount Isa community and sporting groups will soon be sharing in more than $23,880, which will go towards various venue and equipment upgrades as well as local events, thanks to Council’s Community Grants and Sponsorship Program.

At its Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday, October 14, Council resolved to award 2020 Round 1 Community Grants and Sponsorship Program funding to the following organisations:

Community Grants

  • Mount Isa Filipino Australian Association Inc – $3200;
  • Mount Isa AFL Inc. – $2019 (incl. GST);
  • North West Canoe Club – $5000;
  • Mount Isa Judo Academy – $4816.

Total: $15,035

Sponsorship

  • Commerce North West Inc. – $3850 (incl. GST);
  • Zonta Club of Mount Isa – $5000.

Total: $8850

The Mount Isa Filipino Australian Association Inc’s funding will go towards upgrading their food van, ensuring it’s self-contained with cooking equipment and utensils and able to be utilised for community events to sell Filipino food, as well as able to be used by other not-for-profit organisations for fundraising activities.

Mount Isa AFL Inc. will put their funding towards purchasing new line-marking equipment for their sporting field, ensuring line-marking is clear, sharp, efficient and sustainable.

The North West Canoe Club provides people with the opportunity to participate in a range of paddle-based sports – primarily kayaking, canoeing and boating – and will use its funding to expand its range by purchasing two- and four-person outrigger canoes and paddles, to introduce the sport of outrigger paddling to Mount Isa.

The club is planning to hold community events similar to its annual Dragon Boat Regatta to allow its members and community-based teams to try out, practise and compete in this popular water sport.

The Mount Isa Judo Academy will use its funding to replace the Mount Isa Judo Signs on its building and fence and upgrade the security lighting to LED around the building.

Council will be one of the sponsors of Commerce North West’s 2020 Jemena Northern Outback Business Awards, which have been running now for many years and are the premier event on the North West business calendar.

Council will also be one of the sponsors of the Zonta Club of Mount Isa’s International Women’s Day Dinner, an annual event that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women in the Mount Isa community.

Each year a different inspiring guest speaker addresses attendees, sharing their story about adversity or achieving in their own field. Nominated local women are recognised for their achievements through the annual Women of Achievement Awards.
