Waste and Recycling
Welcome to the official webpage of Waste Management in Mount Isa City Council. As a responsible and environmentally conscious community, Council is committed to efficient waste management practices that prioritise sustainability, cleanliness, and the wellbeing of our residents.
Only 1/3 of your general waste belongs in landfill. The rest can be recycled in the yellow-top bin or composted at home.
Council is excited to announce upcoming changes to recycling in Mount Isa. At the end of 2024, residents will receive a new 240L yellow-top bin for recyclables. This change will streamline waste collection and promote recycling efforts.

Circular Economy at Mount Isa City Council
As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing sustainability and community welfare, Council is excited to announce the upcoming introduction of residential recycling bins later this year, allowing for easy separation of recyclable materials.
Did you know that over two-thirds of the waste we dispose of in our bins can be recycled? That's a significant amount of material that can find a new purpose instead of ending up in landfills.
Furthermore, nearly 50% of this waste consists of organic matter, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, which can easily be used to create nutrient-rich compost right in your own home. Additionally, Council is offering a complimentary caddy to assist residents in their composting efforts.
As residents, we all share a responsibility in managing the waste we generate. By making conscious choices to recycle and compost, we can significantly reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for our community.
Join us in making Mount Isa a cleaner, greener place for all and promoting a circular economy where waste is repurposed and recycled into valuable resources like:
- Glass from your home can be used in road construction.
- Plastic can be transformed into fencing materials.
