Environmentally Relevant Activities (ERA)

Environmentally Relevant Activities

Certain activities that are categorised as Environmentally Relevant Activities under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (the Act) require the operator to obtain an Environmental Authority (EA) from the administering authority.

The operators are required to obtain an EA if their production/manufacturing exceeds certain limits annually. See below for the activities that are devolved to the Local Government.

ERAs:

  • Asphalt manufacturing
  • Plastic product manufacturing
  • Metal forming
  • Metal recovery
  • Surface coating
  • Boat maintenance or repair carried out at a boat maintenance or repair facility
  • Waste incineration and thermal treatment

Regardless of the total production manufactured in a year, the operator must comply with the General Environmental Duty (GED) under the Act to protect the environment and to take all reasonable and practical measures to prevent / minimise environmental harm and nuisance.
